Blog Post #4- Violent Media is Good for Kids

In Jones,"Violent Media is Good for Kids", he challenges the usual concept that violent media is not appropriate for adolescent viewing. The author expounds on different anecdotal stories in his life and and those surrounding which further exemplifies how violent media is used as a source of release from pressure built within the mind. He implies that shielding the mind from "bad emotions" cause more harm than good in the future. After viewing violent media kids will move forward through life "unafraid of his desires" (Jones 64).
Paragraph 1-4
The author provides anecdotal stories to further illustrate, his mind set at the time."At 13 I was alone and afraid. I suffocated my deepest fears and desires under a nice-boy persona.I withdrew into passivity and loneliness. My parents, not trusting the violent world" (Jones 64).
Paragraph 6
In this paragraph Jones discussed his son's difficulty to join his friends outside during physical activity. In the first grade. "But he was of falling, of the centipedes crawling on the trunk, of sharp branches.I took my cue from his own fantasies and read him old Tarzan comics, rich in combat and bright with flashing knives. For two weeks he lived in them. Then he put them aside. And he climbed the tree"(Jones 66). He envisioned himself as Tarzan mentally which transformed physically into him being able to conquer his fears.

Not understanding how to channel one's rage effectively will eventually overwhelm the person and will be handled in a negative fashion. Mastering this emotion takes practice, "but it's also the emotion our culture distrusts the most"(Jones 66) Jones speaks on hoe effective the range can be handled ,"
knew one little girl who went around exploding with fantasies so violent."n the playground she acted out Sailor Moon fights, and in the classroom she wrote stories about people being stabbed with knives.  I started helping her tell her stories. She wrote them, performed them, drew them like comics: sometimes bloody. She came out of it just as fiery and strong, but more self-controlled and socially competent: a leader among her peers."(Jones 66)
In Paragraph 1 -The author automatically pulls the audience in, revealing tough emotions that he dealt with as a child. After feeling trapped and alone he was set free by the "Incredible Hulk." This character fueled with violence, charged with rage, fueled Jones desire for power. The author depicting himself "Punny Boy" transitioning into the Hulk. Kids are impressionable therefore this behavior of imitating the hulk allows the confidence to gleam through the "loneliness and passivity" (Jones 64). The techniques used definitely appealed to the emotion, there's not necessarily any expertise to back up his claims.
In Paragraph 6- The author turns the attention toward his son. Jones figured that introducing him to the fearful, powerful Tarzan , the King of the Jungle, clings to his young impressionable mind, fueling his imagination to be just like Tarzan. This tactic gives hope, but with the addition of the violent knives Tarzan uses in the story,  also introduces violent add into mind of the child, that these weapons are things capable of use when in trouble. The author still adds many details about how the child can regain confidence through another a fictional character, but including logistical evidence in the paragraphs that are flooded with emotion also helps the reader to conclude that the essay in not biased.
Paragraph 13-14- This particular anecdotal story discusses the fact that a little girl already had serious amount of aggression and anger battled inside. At any given moment there was a constant out lash in behavior, in her speech, and her drawings. Jones used this specific example shedding light on how the rage can still be tamed. It gives her a positive way to release it. The author tries to show how divulging younger minds into media violence can help any and everyone. In each scenario presented he shows the difference in gender as well as the situational circumstance is quite unique and each subject faces a different issue which is great about this essay.

The evidence Jones used were based upon personal anecdotal stories which show transformation in each character's growth of confidence. Although the essay has been flodded with emotion which captivates the audience, there needs to be a balance within each example leading back to some factual evidence that viewing violent media, actually helps to correct and motivate their behavior. One great strength is that every anecdote presented showed the uniqueness of every situation as well as pertaining to gender and how allowing them to release into that specific realm, granted them success for the future.

Everyone's experience is different, however opening the doors of viewing violent media to an unstable child whom has been neglected and abused leads into the loss of many. As one can possibly foreshadow this problem solving tactic that was suppose to benefit this child's life actually resulted in the loss of many . The author presents heart warming stories of those around him which further appeals to his audience but without the lack of statistical data to back up the stories it leaves a cliff-hanger, wondering will work for every child in America?
