Blog Post 6-How Has Social Media Negatively Impacted the Lives of Young Women

Social Media has negatively impacted the lives of many young women in plethora of ways, physically, psychologically and also socially. There has been an increased amount of cases dealing with suicidal attempts to eating disorders and the constant battle of comparing realistic pictures of ourselves to the photo-shopped version of others. Social media has given society the stamp of approval for such behavior to continue. Have You Been Targeted as Yet?

Teenagers have endured enough stress with having to worry about various body types that are approved by society via magazines, television shows, but most importantly the internet. As young ladies view the typical  trend-setter bodies they are forced to conform to these  unrealistic body types, especially when they are in the midst of puberty.

I was really interested on doing this topic because of past experiences in high school and about past as well as current stories about this trend.  Have you ever seen that one user on your social media whether on (Facebook, Instagram, twitter, pinterest, oovoo etc.) whom literally gets thousands of likes on one single picture and captures the undivided attention of the world because of their beauty?

I am not sure if beauty is characterized by the amount of skin that has to be shown versus the raw un-cut, no filter picture with a simple smile is good enough?

Social media has a negative connotation to its name for attention, for those seeking love, validation, acceptance from peers or strangers they've never met before, young women have fallen victim to keep up with the societal pressure of fitting-in.

As I read in a past Psychology class Maslow's Hierarchy of needs, the first things that all human beings yearn for is Belonging/Acceptance, and how ironic is it  that the one thing we yearn for is the downfall for many lives that have passed.

Here is a hyperlink body image which emphasizes great points that we as women do to ourselves which also contributes to insecurities leading us to portray this perfect life or perfect body we want to have and show the world. These different tools of filters and resizing and auto-correcting are forms of photo-shopping as well, succumbing to these colorful tools slowly but surely reduces the self esteem that we are trying to increase.
